| BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING (BIM) |
As an industry leader, W.D. Manor Mechanical Contractors, Inc. is dedicated to pursue the newest building methods in virtual construction and an analysis of projects before any material is purchased. WDM uses the latest Integrated Project Delivery methods, including Building Information Modeling (BIM), Virtual Design and Construct (VDC) and the benefits therein.
For decades, the automotive, aerospace and shipbuilding industries have been designing and building their intricate products with this unique modeling software. This methodology to virtually design, analyze and construct has now been embraced by the construction industry as a valuable tool to reduce lost time and rework. WDM has employed 3D CAD modeling for many years for our own use, and welcomes the implementation of Building Information Modeling project wide.
Without BIM, the typical design process consists of constantly producing new iterations of drawings by each design discipline. Those documents are distributed for review and analysis; then more drawings are created and the process may repeat itself multiple times throughout the project duration. This abundance of design documents frequently creates a version control issue which can be traced as the leading cause in coordination problems and the overall in-efficiency of the design and construction process.
Building Information Modeling is actually a small database composed of intelligent objects that carry physical and functional characteristics in them as data. These objects combine to give a complete representation of the physical and functional characteristics of the project. Once the data is entered into the modeling software, the design is no longer a series of lines and text on multiple drawings and associated documents. BIM has the ability to produce plans, details, bills of material. The model can communicate with other electronic tools and equipment to perform valuable processes without human interaction. BIM allows the project teams to collectively resolve conflicts prior to field installation. These issues can be both costly and time consuming, causing major delays in the project schedule. Some of the tasks that previously relied on human interaction with documents to visually extract information; no longer are exposed to human error.
At W.D. Manor we continue to find new and improved ways to utilize Building Information Modeling and strive to integrate BIM into our projects.
